You know when you're PC crashes and burns and you have to reinstall EVERYTHING and you denounce God and a little part of the good inside you dies?
There is a bright side to this... You can get back to basics and install a nice clean system with JUST the stuff you want.
So here are a few gems I've collected over the years and have always come back to -

Openwide
This is my favourite... It modifies your open and save dialog boxes in Windows so that they start in 'details' mode.
This means you can quickly sort your files by date or whatever. It also lets you specify the size and location of the dialogs on your screen.
http://lingo.atspace.com

XnView
Great fast image viewer with some editing features. This is what ACDSee used to be before it got massive and slow.
There's even a Pocket PC version available.
http://www.xnview.com

USBDLM
This little tool lets you specify what drive letter your USB devices get assigned when you plug them in. You can use all sorts of rules or just say 'Start at x:' etc.
For example all my USB drives get x: y: or z: and my iPod is always i:
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html

ImgBurn
Simple little CD burning util. Does pretty much anything. Could use a bit of work on the interface but once you find everything it's quick and easy to use.
http://www.imgburn.com

POP Peeper
Just an email grabbing client thingy. Can check all your email accounts at once. Good if you're at work and don't have web access to Gmail etc.
You can go through and delete all your spam before you download it too.
http://www.poppeeper.com

MediaCoder
Audio/Video converter. Convert those weird .mpc files back to crappy old .mp3 in no time.
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

Of course there are obvious others such as Firefox and Thunderbird but everyone knows about them already.
